As Sue painted, she pondered the poem/prayer composed by Newman, Lead Kindly Light. If you read the poem (scroll down) and study the painting, you may see the connection!

John Henry Newman (1801-1890) stands as a giant in the fields of theology, philosophy, and education. Influencing many academic and spiritual disciplines, Newman's writings and his lifelong search for religious truth continue to inspire scholars throughout the world.

John Henry Newman began his religious career as a 19th-century Fellow of Oriel College and as the Vicar of St. Mary the Virgin Church in Oxford, England. At the age of 44, he converted to Roman Catholicism and founded the first English-speaking Oratory of St. Philip Neri in Birmingham, England. He was made a cardinal of the Catholic Church in 1879. His many scholarly works were a significant force that helped shape religious thought not only in his own time, but also throughout the 20th century.

Patron saint of Universities, and especially "Newman Centers" on campus.

Lead, Kindly Light
Lead, Kindly Light, amidst th'encircling gloom,
Lead Thou me on!
The night is dark, and I am far from home,
Lead Thou me on!
Keep Thou my feet; I do not ask to see
The distant scene; one step enough for me.
I was not ever thus, nor prayed that Thou
Shouldst lead me on;
I loved to choose and see my path; but now
Lead Thou me on!
I loved the garish day, and, spite of fears,
Pride ruled my will. Remember not past years!
So long Thy power hath blest me, sure it still
Will lead me on.
O'er moor and fen, o'er crag and torrent, till
The night is gone,
And with the morn those angel faces smile,
Which I have loved long since, and lost awhile!
Meantime, along the narrow rugged path,
Thyself hast trod,
Lead, Saviour, lead me home in childlike faith,
Home to my God.
To rest forever after earthly strife
In the calm light of everlasting life

Prints of this image are also available in this shop.

The same image is on both sides.

All of our pendants are made with lead free solder and glass. Available with or without the beautiful silver plated snake chain of your choice. We offer a ball chain for elsewhere in my shop.

If you put the charm/medal on a key chain, it may get broken if not treated kindly. It is glass. If you want one for a key chain, We can custom make your medium charm/medal with a thicker glass for $2. Small charm/medals don't need thicker glass, but either way, they need to be on a chain before you add them to your key ring.

Jewelry orders are sent gift wrapped as shown, and Sue will include a holy card of her drawing of Pope Francis!
