There is a tranquility to this scene that we find very appealing. We ought to add a category called \"Devotional Landscapes.\" The old hermit is a Franciscan. He is out in nature at his hermitage, he has his Bible out, and he is taking a moment to share some food with Brother Crow. The crows seem very familiar with the routine. These are his daily companions. What the friar has is very spare and simple. Notice the pipe of running water just below the Bible and the little shrine to the right of his hermitage. He lives an austere life, but one that seems spiritually rich to us.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe oil on canvas picture has been dated to 1907, but somehow the artist's name is not yet married up to this unsigned painting. It is a highly skilled rendering. Our guess is the artist had a lot of19th Century French or possibly German training. As academic painting added more narrative elements, it led the way for the golden age of illustration developed in the late Nineteenth Century. Artists learned to feature their subjects in a way that told a story. For us, this is a very comfortable story, one we enjoy looking at. It gives us a sense of serenity, an atmosphere of Godly simplicity. We can imagine feeding that crow some of our lunch as we paused from our Bible study.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e** IMPORTANT ** There is about an inch-and-a-third of white space around the picture in the 8.5x11 size, so the IMAGE IS SMALLEER THAN THE PAPER! For 11x14, the border is about 1.6 inches, and for 5x7, the border is about .5 inch. Francis had such a consuming love for Christ, he was given the Stigmata, a replication of the wounds of Jesus. They are shown stylized on this picture as planks of wood coming from his hands, feet, and chest. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe story of that stigmata is, shortly after the Feast of the Holy Cross, when Francis had prayed he would receive the same marks on his body and the same love in his heart that Jesus had had at the Cross, a Holy Seraph Angel appeared to him, one of the angels who burn with Divine Love. He held the Crucifix which gave Francis the sacred stigmata, which is why Francis is sometimes call the Seraphic Saint, or in the Latin on this card, Seraphicus. (source: Fr. Painted around 1100 A.D. by an anonymous Umbrian artist, a copy of it hung in a rundown wayside chapel a couple of miles outside of Assisi, Italy. A young man was praying before it one day when suddenly it because alive and spoke to him. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\"Francis, Francis, go and repair My house which, as you can see, is falling into ruins.\" Francis thought Jesus meant the little run down chapel. Francis and his followers repaired the little church, attracting more and more people. Francis later realized Jesus meant His Church in general. Eventually Francis's' order became a movement and one of the major religious orders of the world. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe little church is called Portiuncula. A few centuries after Francis's death, a basilica was built around it and the hut that Francis died in. It can be an incredibly moving pilgrimage to see that little church. He could draw closer to God by caring for the natural world. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis event of Francis listening to an angel is not a biographical incident that we know of. It is instead a beautiful way of explaining Francis by use of a symbol. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe artist was Frank Cadogan Cowper (1877-1958), who was called \"The Last of the Pre-Raphaelites.\" He was a Royal Academy artist, one of the most famous English artists of his day. He did a lot of dreamy and romantic pictures, and later specialized in portraits of people, as his earlier religious and historical themes, the Pre-Raphael work, fell out of fashion. He did numerous Catholic paintings, of which this is one of our favorites. He painted Our Lady of the Fruits of the Earth, also in our shop. The entirety of his sermon was preserved in a biography of him written three years after he died. Francis was so holy, he still inspires countless souls to turn to God, 800 years after his death!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePedro Subercaseaux (1880–1956) was a famous Chilean painter and the son of a Chilean painter. He did a huge amount of illustrations for books and magazines in the Golden Age of Illustration, which is one of the reasons his style is so fresh and charming even today. He also did many oil paintings of gallery and governmental importance, as well as doing many portraits, including St. Pius X. Subercaseaux was also extremely devoted to Christ. In 1907 he married Elvira Lyon Otaégui, but in 1920 the pope granted them an annulment so that they could both enter religious orders. In 1927, Subercaseaux was ordained a Benedictine priest. He continued painting until near the end of his life. We have another one of his Francis watercolors (which he did in 1912) in our shop as a holy card, and we hope to offer you more of his religious paintings, as God allows.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e** IMPORTANT ** THE IMAGE IS SMALLER THAN THE PAPER! Famous all over Europe, he became head of the Spanish Academy of Fine Arts for 10 years. He was commissioned by the Franciscan Order of Valencia to do a Life of St Francis series for the 700th anniversary of Francis’s entry into Heaven. He composed 70 paintings for it, finishing in 1926. They are all painted with gouache mixed with charcoal on Whatman English paper. Most are monochrome. This is one of the most colorful ones of the series.
