Christ Child in the Rose
German Holy Card
We love this holy card! It’s one of the most enjoyable we’ve ever found. Charming and light-hearted, it is also meaningful. It is a German engraving, perhaps hand-colored, we think from the 1850s. Mary and Jesus are seated on a cloud just above the ground. Our little traveler, who has a cape, a hat, and a walking stick but yet is a child, is kneeling before them, offering roses.
A lot of art from the 1850s seems stodgy to us, or in the case of holy cards, simplistic. But this seems fresh and vital, something that could have been done today. The scroll at the top, the rose bower, the relaxed postures of Mother and Child, all delight us. We are that traveler, a child inside, come before our mother and brother, reaching up to them. Our shoes are off because this is holy ground. The beauty and joy in this scene let us gaze at it over and over, lifting up our rose bouquet.
The words in the banner, Das Christkindlein in der Rose, mean in English, the little Christ Child in the rose.
** IMPORTANT ** The image is smaller than the paper! There is a white border of about 0.5" inch for 5x7", 1.3" for 8.5x11, or 1.6" for 11x14" pictures. The border gives the prints a finished look, and lets them look good in frames without using a matt.

– Archival pigments, rated to last for generations.
