The name Gabriel means "man of God," or "God has shown himself mighty." It appears first in the prophesies of Daniel in the Old Testament. The angel announced to Daniel the prophecy of the seventy weeks. His name also occurs in the apocryphal book of Enoch. He was the angel who appeared to Zachariah to announce the birth of St. John the Baptizer. Finally, he announced to Mary that she would bear a Son Who would be conceived of the Holy Spirit, Son of the Most High, and Savior of the world. (from Catholic Online)

Sue Kouma Johnson painted this image in acrylics and colored pencil on rag mat board, size 9 x 12 inches. The Angel Gabriel is often depicted with lilies, as he was the angel privileged to visit the Virgin Mary. The artist was striving to portray the beauty and surprise of such an awe inspiring messenger, in how she depicted his flowing hair and intense gaze.

By the way, although we refer to St Gabriel as a "he," angels have no sexual identity, as humans do, as they are pure spirits. But they often appear in the outward, visible form of a human, usually male. Thus we refer to them as "he," by tradition.

The Angel Gabriel's feast day is September 29th, and he is the patron of communications workers.

You may choose whether you desire the painting unframed or framed and matted. We will talk about your mat and frame choices before we do the framing.
