This lovely painting was the basis for a fresco at the Benedictine Abbey of St. Hildegard in Eibingen, Germany. Painted by Benedictine Religious in 1912, it is done in the Beuron style which they had invented fifty years earlier. It is a style that emphasizes the calm ideals of Heaven, using geometry and formal qualities to help the viewer with their worship.

The Abbey is the actual one founded by St. Hildegard of Bingen in 1165! The nuns today work their vineyards and do crafts, as well as provide hospitality. They have also recorded music, including Hildegard’s compositions. This fresco, although with the angels altered, is still above the entrance to the sacristy.

St. Hildegard was a Benedictine abbess, writer, poet, and composer who lived an astonishing life in 12th-century Germany. She had numerous prophetic and mystical visions during her lifetime and is reported to have been a miracle worker. She has recently been canonized and made a Doctor of the Church.

The date in the corner helped the fresco painters know they were using the most recent version. We spent considerable time restoring this long out-of-copyright image, and like many of our prints, it is available only through us.
