"Meditation of The Holy Virgin"
Sarah Paxton Ball Dodson (1889)

This graceful and lovely portrait of Mary evokes her calm and peace. She is seated quietly in a prayerful meditation. The painting is full of blues for Mary, and whites, such as the lilies, which represent her purity. It's not just that the setting is calm, but the colors themselves are serene.

Sarah Paxton Ball Dodson (1847-1906) enjoyed art from age three, but her father disapproved, so she waited until he died in 1872 before she studied at an art school. She attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts but spent most of her life in Europe, painting religious and historical subjects as well as landscapes. She made a name for herself, exhibiting work at Parisian Salons and elsewhere. Today this is one of her most famous paintings.
