“Renaissance Procession”
from Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry
by Jan Maelwael of Limbourg

This is the only print in our collection without a strictly Catholic subject matter, but it was painted in a Catholic France by a Catholic painter, and it is an idealized representation of Christendom. Everybody in this world was Catholic. We love this picture. It brings us joy.

Painted about 1415, in the early Renaissance, this is the kind of picture that defined the age. This is how they saw themselves. This is a depiction of young nobles riding in a May procession. In the background is the Hôtel de Neslé, the Duke of Berry’s residence in Paris. Believe it or not, this was calendar art for the month of May. We love the colors, the joyful serenity of this group. We romanticize the Renaissance, yet they romanticized themselves. For us, this is an idealized vision of how Christendom should look, a paraphrase of Heaven. We are, all of us, children of the King.

Commissioned by John, the Duke of Berry, who was a lavish collector of illuminated manuscripts, it was painted by the Limbourg Brothers; Jan Maelwael did May. The painters and the patron all died in 1416, possibly of plague. The book was finished by other painters and is today considered perhaps the most valuable book in the world.

There were a lot of blemishes on this, and we spent hours restoring it to its original beauty. Overall, there are tens or hundreds of thousands of good Catholic images out there, but we work to bring you just the few we love, and to make them as perfect as we can. We want to curate a collection that brings you joy.
