Mary, having heard at the Annunciation that Elizabeth was six months pregnant, left her home to visit her. Upon Mary's arrival, the baby in Elizabeth's womb, John the Baptist, was stirred by the presence of his Lord, and Elizabeth prophesied, her words forming part of the Hail Mary prayer. In response to Elizabeth, Mary pronounced the "Magnificat," which begins with these words: "My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my Savior."  She remained with Elizabeth for about three months.

The original painting was done with watercolor, markers, and colored pencils on paper.
