"Our Lady of Ollignies"
Anonymous Artist

This image was found in 1918 at the time of the Armistice ending World War I. It was in the basement of a Belgian Catholic boarding school run by Bernardine nuns. In style it is a blend of western Church figure painting and eastern Church icon writing. It is called Our Lady of Ollignies as that was the town in Belgium where it was found, and it is associated with the title Our Lady of Sorrows. It is said that prayers to Mary while meditating on this image have brought signal favors.

The boarding school had been attended some years earlier by Berthe Petit, a mystical third order Franciscan, and so this image is sometimes associated with her. She reported visions of Jesus, emphasizing the sorrowful quality to the sufferings of Mary. Her visions received a Nihil Obstat by Cardinal Mercier of Belgium, meaning Nothing Obstructs, i.e., they do not contradict the Catholic faith, but they have not yet been approved as valid by Rome. This image was the cover of a recent (well, recent to us) printing of a book we highly recommend, St. Louis De Monfort's The Secret of the Rosary.

** IMPORTANT ** THE IMAGE IS SMALLER THAN THE PAPER! There is a blank border all around the image of about .5" for 5x7, 1.3" for 8.5x11, 1.6" for 11x14, and 1.75" for 13x17" and 16x20". All Approx! The white space gives the framed picture a finished look without using a matt.
