Beautiful and theological, this cosmic German holy card from the late 19th Century has Mary with the Holy Trinity. Mary and the baby Jesus are bordered by a Latin inscription which reads, Egredietur virga de radice Iesse et flos de radice eius ascendet. It is Isaiah 11:1 and means, A shoot will spring from the tree of Jesse, a new shoot will grow from his roots.
‘Virga’ means ‘green twig’ or ‘shoot’ (sometimes translated ‘rod’) and is related to the word Virgo, or virgin. The artist further plays on this association by having the tree of Jesse that Mary and Jesus are “sprouting” from be full of roses, for Mary.
B. Kühlen & M. Gladbach are the publishers. Artist is anonymous.
Before and After Images show how fussy our restorations are.
The print is really sharp, and the colors are rich. The holy card is long out of copyright and is now in the public domain. We print it on special art paper with archival quality pigments, rated to last for many generations without fading when kept out of the direct sun.
Standard size. Easy to find a ready-made frame at your local Hobby Lobby. If you're sending this as a gift and would like us to frame it for you, please convo and we'll make special arrangements for you.
– 8.5 x 11" acid-free paper
– Archival pigments, rated to last for generations.
– Cardboard backer
– Above story of the art
– Enclosed in a tight-fitting, crystal clear bag.
** IMPORTANT ** There is about an inch-and-a-third of white space around the picture, so the image is smaller than the paper.
Thanks!
