"St. Cecily (Cecilia)"
Edward Reginald Frampton

This dreamy painting of St. Cecilia shows her sleeping before a pipe organ while an angel looks on. This is the Cecilia mentioned in the Mass today. She was a third century martyr in Rome, but the painter, Edward Reginald Frampton (1872-1903), has placed her in an historically romantic setting, with Medieval castles and Renaissance ships and beautiful flowers all around her. This is fitting because Celia was known for the beauty of her music. Indeed, she is the Patron Saint of music and musicians. St. Cecelia's feast day is November 22.

Frampton was a follower of the Pre-Raphaelites and their idyllic work, with its emphasis on myth and symbols. He was an extensive church painter, known for his many murals. This painting was one of the last he did. The flatness, the lack of shadows, the tenderness of the subject matter, all give it a restful and dignified serenity, adding depth to its appealing beauty. It's a setting, a landscape that invites us in. Red flowers in Catholic paintings normally indicate the blood of martyrdom.

When this panting was first exhibited, it was with this quote from Alfred Tennyson:

Or in a clear-wall'd city on the sea,
Near gilded organ-pipes, her hair
Wound with white roses, slept Saint Cecily;
An angel look'd at her.
