Holy Mary, Pray for Us! Loreto Embroideries

Mary is an intercessor for us. She implores her Son, Jesus, on our behalf. All of us on Earth have sinned and fallen short of the glory. In this stunning embroidery based on the art of Ezio Anichini, Mary is interceding for sinners. They are in different stages of their sin, but they are all hurt by it and in need of her help.

This title is from the Litany of Loreto, which expresses our relationship to Mary. One of our favorite artists, Ezio Anichini, made illustrations in 1912 of all the titles of the Litany in use at that time. His work is Art Nouveau, or Stile Liberty as it was called in Italian, one of our favorite styles. He makes his Litany precise yet romantic and emotionally engaging.

A seamstress, unknown to history, took 12 (with rumors of a 13th) of Anichini’s pictures and made them into exquisite needlework. They are now held by the Royal School of Needlework in London, regarded as masterpieces of beauty, design, and execution.
