Using real people and animals, he depicted the Nativity scene for the people of Greccio, Italy. In this 18th century art by Eduard con Steinle, we see the townspeople gathered for the celebration of Christmas mass. It is the evening vigil mass, and in the distance a star shines brightly, recalling the star of Bethlehem.

Most churches, and many Christians, display a crèche at Christmas, often with statues.
