Not much is known of his life, but he painted life scenes, landscapes, still lifes and architectural views. According to the internet (babelio.com), his full name was Henri-François-Victor Marius Michel, and he also worked with his father doing bookbinding, where he won awards for his innovations in that trade. (edition-originale.com)\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cp\u003eHe exhibited at the Paris Salons from 1879–1907, where he received a number of awards and had pictures sold to museums, which was pretty much top of the pops for the time. He was known for doing sometimes daring or provocative paintings, and this painting has a couple things in it the historians point out. There is a Star of David on the beer stein holding the brushes, which could be a brewer’s mark, but it could also be telling the viewer that she is Jewish. There was a lot of anti-Semitism in Paris at the time. Also, women were often blocked from art careers, and so this painting, besides being a tranquil scene of beautiful Catholic art-making, was also a bit of a statement. There is a blank border around the image. Approximately 0.5\" wide for 5x7, 1.3\" for 8.5x11, 1.6\" for 11x14, and 1.75\" for 13x17 and 16x20. For the two poster sizes, 18x24 and 24x36, we use 0.5\" borders. We do this because the ratio of the rectangle of the art almost never matches the rectangle of the paper, and if it did happen to match one size, it would not match the others. Most fine art printers do this because otherwise they’d have to crop the art or warp it to make it fit the paper. The border looks good.
