St. Bridget of Sweden– by Swedish artist Carl Larsson – Beautiful Catholic Art

Saint Bridget of Sweden (Birgitta Birgersdotter, c. 1303–1373) was a mystical child who had visions of Jesus and spoke to him. She was married young to a Swedish prince, and she and her husband became Third Order Franciscans. They built hospitals and took care of the poor and had eight children together. When he died about the time she was 40, she gave away her possessions and started the Order of the Most Holy Savior, now known as the Brigittines, still active today. She died in Rome while waiting for the Pope to return from Avignon. Feast day: July 23

One of her 8 children, Catherine (1330-1381), grew up and also became a canonized Saint. She went to Rome twice, the first time with her mother. On that trip, the young and beautiful and holy Catherine faced many unwanted advances from Roman men. The story goes that the harassment reached such a pitch that on several occasions a red female deer appeared and fended off her aggressive suitors. The second time she went to Rome, she went as a nun in her mother’s order, and while she stayed in Rome, she became good friends with St. Catherine of Siena. (source: newadvent.org) Feast Day: March 24. Patron against abortions and unwanted and unchaste advances.

Carl Olaf Larsson (1853-1919) was a Swedish artist known for his tranquil scenes of Swedish life. He grew up very poor, but he had artistic talent. When he was 13, his teacher encouraged him to apply to the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts, and they accepted him. His poverty and being an outsider may have influenced his choice of making beautiful, charming works of art, as art brought him fame and a comfortable living. We also like that his art of the last 30 years of his life has an Art Nouveau ring to it, as we like Art Nouveau very much. This picture of Bridget and Catherine and the Red Deer was done as a fresco for a Swedish Girls school in the late 1890s, and, along with other frescoes from the school, was collected in a book called Svenska kvinnan genom seklen (translated as The Swedish Woman through the Centuries) about 1900.

** IMPORTANT ** THE IMAGE IS SMALLER THAN THE PAPER! There is a blank border around the image. Approximately 0.5" wide for 5x7, 1.3" for 8.5x11, 1.6" for 11x14, and 1.75" for 13x17 and 16x20. For the two poster sizes, 18x24 and 24x36, we use 0.5" borders. We do this because the ratio of the rectangle of the art almost never matches the rectangle of the paper, and if it did happen to match one size, it would not match the others. Most fine art printers do this because otherwise they’d have to crop the art or warp it to make it fit the paper. The border looks good. It gives the picture a faux matted appearance.

There is almost always a little more border either on the left-right sides, or the top-bottom, depending on whether the ratio of the art is wider or taller than the paper.

We make Archival Quality fine art prints:

– Acid-free paper

– Archival pigments

– Cardboard backer for sizes 11x14 and less.

– Above story of the art

– Enclosed in a tight-fitting, crystal-clear bag.

– Rated to last 200+ years without fading if kept dry and out of the direct sun.

Thanks for your interest!

+JMJ+

Sue & John

Lincoln, Nebraska

“In order to communicate the message entrusted to her by Christ, the Church needs art.”

~ St. Pope John Paul II

Original image is out-of-copyright.
