Saint Teresa of Avila was a Spanish Carmelite nun of the sixteenth century who began her calling to the religious life in a very lax and self indulgent manner, not unlike most of the other nuns in her order.

Fortunately, she underwent a major conversion, and set about reforming the entire Carmelite order.

Along the way, she developed a friendship with a much younger man, Saint John of the Cross, who reformed the male branch of the order.

Saint Teresa is recognized as a doctor of the church, and is patron saint of those who suffer migraines.

Sue Kouma Johnson painted her in acrylics on paper, with pen in hand and the "light of the Holy Spirit" shining on her. The painting measures 8 1/2" x 11".
