In the early 1200s, St. Dominic began promoting the Rosary, reportedly after a vision of the Blessed Virgin. Initially there were 150 prayers, an imitation for the laity of the 150 psalms that religious recited every day.

Saint Pius V established the feast day of Our Lady of the Rosary, October 7, in 1573. The purpose was to thank God for the victory of Christians over the Turks at Lepanto—a crucial historical victory, attributed to the praying of the rosary. St. Padre Pio’s many miracles were associated with his recitation of the rosary, which he called his “weapon.”
