St Clotilde

Patroness of Brides, Widows & Queens

St. Clotilde (475-545) was the wife of the Frankish king Clovis I and a princess of the kingdom of Burgundy. She was instrumental in the conversion of her husband to Christianity, who then had his soldiers accept Christ. The invading Franks accepted the religion of Roman Gauls they had conquered.

The two peoples were united and were for many centuries the leaders of Catholic culture. This helped create Western Christian Civilization. Thus, Clotilde is one of the reasons you’re Catholic.

Clotilda bore Clovis five children and in her later years was known for her almsgiving and penitential works of mercy. She was a widow for 34 years, living more as a religious than a queen.

She and Clovis were the subject of many medieval epic poems. It is hard to overstate her importance in Catholic history in the West. She died in Tours, on June 3, 545.

She is the patron of queens, widows and brides.
