These 12 beautiful, forgotten masterpieces come from Piotr Stachiewicz's 1907 book, God's Year (“Boży Rok”). It had 12 beautiful color prints of Saints, one for each month, with a Polish proverb corresponding to the Saint.
Piotr Stachiewicz (1858-1938) was a Polish artist and illustrator. He was prolific and very popular. He had a wide range of subjects, but most of what you'll find of his is specifically Catholic. He has some really beautiful Mary and Jesus pictures we are eager to list. Researching this project on the internet, we found loads of mentions and articles of him in the art magazines of Europe from the late 1800s to the early 1900s., and even to this day.
About a year ago, we offered his St. Martin of Tours, which was the November picture for hi God's Year, and it has been very popular.
Right now, these prints are available as individual prints or a set of 12, all in the unframed, 8.5x11 size. We hope to add more sizes and frames as time goes on.
THE SAINTS AND PROVERBS
(Some of these Polish aphorisms lose something—or more—in translation, but others are lovely and inspiring.)
1. The Three Wise Men. “Kings to the shed of the day on a hen's foot.”
2. The Virgin Mary. “How the Mother of God will light the celebration, and at her candle, the wolf will fly from the pen to the forest.”
3. St. Joseph. “Sometimes Saint Józek pulls a cart on the grass, but more often he is sad because it is covered with snow.”
4. St. Agnes. “Gracious Agnieszka releases the larks from her sleeve.”
5. St. Sophia. “St. Sophia unfurls her buds.”
6. St. John. “For human welfare and in God's honor, Saint John brings a jug of berries.”
7. St. Anne “St. Anna prays next to her flock that the earth may provide threefold fodder.”
8. St Lawrence “Saint Lawrence carries a wreath from the fields.”
9. St. Regina. “Saint Regina clears the fog.”
10. St. Ursula. “Saint Ursula splashed her pearls, the moon knew. No he said, and when the sun rose, he collected them.”
11. St. Martin of Tours. “Saint Martin was in the meadow he rides a gray horse, the leaves are falling, they pave the way, for Marcin the wind cuts them down.”
12. St. Nicholas “Saint Nicholas blesses the gathering of wolves.” He's the patron saint of wolves and falsely accused prisoners. I think that’s the link.
Unframed prints includes these things:
– Acid-free paper
– Archival pigments, rated to last for generations.
– Cardboard backer
– Above story of the art
– Enclosed in a tight-fitting, crystal clear bag.
** IMPORTANT ** THE IMAGE IS SMALLER THAN THE PAPER! There is a blank border around the image. Approximately 0.5" wide for 5x7, 1.3" for 8.5x11, 1.6" for 11x14, and 1.75" for 13x17 and 16x20. For the two poster sizes, 18x24 and 24x36, we use 0.5" borders. We do this because the ratio of the rectangle of the art almost never matches the rectangle of the paper, and if it did happen to match one size, it would not match the others. Most fine art printers do this because otherwise they’d have to crop the art or warp it to make it fit the paper. The border looks good. It gives the picture a faux matted appearance.
There is almost always a little more border either on the left-right sides, or the top-bottom, depending on whether the ratio of the art is wider or taller than the paper.
We make Archival Quality fine art prints:
– Acid-free paper
– Archival pigments
– Cardboard backer for sizes 11x14 and less.
– Above story of the art
– Enclosed in a tight-fitting, crystal-clear bag.
– Rated to last 200+ years without fading if kept dry and out of the direct sun.
Thanks for your interest!
