"Angels Garlanding the Infant Jesus"
Ann MacBeth

We had a hard time taking our eyes off of this gorgeous piece when we found it. It's Art Nouveau, our favorite art style, and Catholic examples of it are relatively rare. The colors are rich and subtle, the composition is intricate and lush. This painting draws us in. Angels are attending the baby Jesus, worshipping him, bringing him beauty, doting on him.

Art Nouveau flourished in the opening years of the 20th Century. It was a popular style, not classical, so for the most part only younger Catholic artists did work in this style, and not for long, because within a few years the style had fallen out of fadhion. We were immediately drawn to this picture, an otherwise unknown treasure.

Ann Macbeth (1870-1948) was primarily known as an embroidery artist and teacher, though she also did paintings, especially early in her career. She studied at the Glasgow School of Art from 1897 to 1901, and her embroidery work and paintings were often featured in the London edition of The Studio, an important Art Nouveau magazine.

This painting was a watercolor with gouache and gold paint. It fits in style with the "Madonna and Child" by Jean Antoinette Labrousse, another gorgeous and rare Art Nouveau Catholic painting available in our shop.
