This painting is by the Italian late Baroque painter Baldassare Franceschini. He lived from 1611 to 1690. Here he portrays Catherine of Sienna, whose persuasive words and clarity of thought moved thousands to join the cause of Christ, and convinced the Pope to return to Rome from Avignon. She was favored with the Wounds of Christ (The Stigmata).
Author of a great theological work, Dialogue, she has been declared a Doctor of the Church. She died in 1380, at the age of thirty-three. Her feast day is April 29th. She is the patron of Italy, Europe, nurses, firefighters, and sick people.
