We actually have a record of St Francis's preaching to the birds. Shortly after his death, the pope sent an investigator down to Assisi, who talked to all his friars and friends and put together this first biography in 1229. One of them had witnessed him preaching to the birds Oh man all the birds being attentive to the gospel. I don't know if it was brother Leo or who, I haven't dug that deep yet, but on the back of the holy cards is the entire sermon to the birds as written out in that 1229 biography. And think about it. birds have kind of a short attention span, so you got to keep your homily short!

Francis is known for his love of animals and the natural world. He is often portrayed with birds. The art is by Sue Kouma Johnson, and depicts a popular story of Saint Francis where he preached to a flock of birds.
