In this scene from Mathew 28, Mary Magdalene and another Mary, not His mother, have gone to the tomb of Jesus and found it empty. They are told by an angel, "He is not here, He has risen from the dead!" The Gospel says they were frightened but overjoyed. This is the Gospel, this wonderful news! Our innocent Savior has lain down his own life so that he might take it up again, that we might follow him.

This scene in Mark 16 mentions 3 Marys, traditionally regarded as Mary Magdalene, Mary of Clopas, and Mary Salome. Typically, in illustrations of this scene, it is St. Mary Magdalene who is portrayed, alone with the angels.

We’re not sure when this charming old holy card was made. Maybe around 1880? It is in the style of the northern European holy cards, like Belgium, but it is in English, so we're a bit mystified. Beautiful old holy cards are rarely in English. We'll see if we can track down its provenance and update this description.
