In this lovely dyptich, the Angel Gabriel is delicately making the Annunciation to Mary, holding the lilies of purity, and reaching out to her while gesturing to God. Mary is delictately receiving the word.
Vladimir Borovikovsky (1757–1825) was a Ukranian painter whose father was an icon painter. He painted religious work, and many portraits, around 500, which is why his paintings like these two are so beautiful. They were on two church gates which also included the four evangelists. 1804-1809. Originals are 29 inches diameter.
We have a few Orthodox pieces of art in our shop because theye are beautiful and compltely congruent with the Catholic faith. There is so much identical belief between the two churches. You might not have noticed, but in 1965 the two churches jointly lifted the mutual excommunications of 1054 A.D., which I personally have always thought was more about politics than theology, but what do I know. In November 2019, the current Patriarch of Constantinople, Patriarch Bartholomew, stated he believes Orthodox re-union with the Catholic Church is inevitable. That we all may be one! One Lord, one church!
