Matthaus Schiestl (1869-1939) did this warm-hearted holy card of the Holy Family on the night of Jesus’s birth. Schiestl was a German Catholic painter who became famous for his endearing religious pictures in the first part of the 20th Century. He made many holy cards and his work was widely collected. His paintings all had that folksy spirituality. The German government even made postage stamps with his images. We thought the Christmas prayer of St. John the XXIII had a cozy, loving vibe which fit Schiestl’s picture.

Our restoration of this holy card is one of our series of Christmas Holy cards. We've worked hard to provide a good variety of beautiful artwork, along with a rich variety of prayers, meditations, and scripture readings on the back. We've restored these beautiful old cards as a little way to help strengthen people's spiritual lives and make our Christmas celebrations more prayerful.
