This is part of a chant for the Christmas day Mass, and we still use it today, and sometimes with the old music. It goes back to 800 A.D., or earlier, and those are the real notes for it. You can hear it online.

The exquisite medieval illumination dates to the 1390s when it was done by Don Silvestro dei Gherarducci. Puer natus est nobis means "A child is born to us." That’s from Isaiah 9:6, and we’ve shown a little more from it on the back, along with a bit from Psalm 98:1. They are both used in the Christmas Day Mass entrance chant: Isaiah gives us the good news, and the Psalm tells how to respond: with joy. Of course with joy! We have been saved from death!

Sacred Scripture, medieval Christian art, and Gregorian chant come together to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. And we love the tiny nativity scene inside the capital P!
