For years we’ve looked for the right guardian angel picture. The problem with most of the ones we’ve seen is they show an angel hovering over some children about to do something disastrous—like fall off a rickety bridge into a raging torrent. The angel, who looks like a sugar plum fairy, is reaching in, ready to catch them. Of course, it’s good to help strengthen a child’s faith, but we think that kind of picture gives them the wrong idea of how angels work, and could weaken their faith. When harm comes in the child’s life—as it always does—what do we tell them? That they got a bad angel? That angels don’t work the way that picture said they did?

This beautiful picture by Louis Jamot is a realistic and profound depiction of how angels actually work. A mother is holding a child and the angel is praying. While on a few, very rare occasions in our lifetime, we have felt the hand of our guardian angel intervene and keep us from calamity, we have no doubt that our angel has been with us the whole time, constantly attending to us. We are protected by faithful angels. They get their strength from God. Jesus says of the angels of children that they “always look upon the face of my heavenly Father.” (Mathew 18:10) They are always at our side, but they are always looking to God, not staring at us. Our angels intercede for us. They pray for us.

Louis Janmot (1814–1892) was a devout Catholic and a prominent artist and poet of the 19th Century. He won many prizes with his paintings as well as decorated many churches in his long and tumultuous life. This painting is from his life’s great work, Poem of the Soul, a series of intense, mystical paintings along with poetry that he worked on for 40 years, off and on.

** IMPORTANT ** THE IMAGE IS SMALLER THAN THE PAPER! There is a blank border all around the image of about .5" for 5x7, 1.3" for 8.5x11, 1.6" for 11x14, and 1.75" for 13x17" and 16x20" and larger. The ratio of the rectangle of the painting does not match the rectangles of the paper, so these figures are all approximate! The white space gives the framed picture a finished look without using a matt.
