Jesus stands before Pilate. His Passion is just beginning. Pilate is deciding to have him tortured him for a while to perhaps avoid killing him. This is the moment of the beginning of his judgement by Pilate, more or less the 1st Station of the Cross, which is often shown after the torture with a bloody Christ and Pilate washing his hands.

The Russian painter Nikolai Koshelev (1840-1918) had spent a couple of years in Rome (1880–81) where we assume he saw some ancient Roman interiors, as this painting sure looks look one. Painted walls, not much furniture—spare places. And the emptiness of the place reflects on the emptiness of the pagan soul.

Koshelev did a lot of religious work and church restorations. He painted eighteen pictures on the theme of Christ’s Passions for St Alexander Nevsky Church in Jerusalem (finished in the early 1890s), of which this is reportedly one. Koshelev was a major Russian painter, but as a religious painter, his reputation did not survive the communist revolution. (source: www.rusartnet.com)
