One of our favorite pictures ever, this Madonna and Child by Jeanne Antoinette LaBrousse is a perfect example of Art Nouveau, and one of a small number of Catholic masterpieces in that style. We loved it the first time we saw it, and we immediately introduced it to Etsy. In the years since, we still love it, and we are glad to be able to still introduce it to new Etsy shoppers and vendors.
We did a lot of research at the time, and tracked down the image's public debut to a February 1918 issue of The Studio, a magazine devoted to Art Nouveau. That style of art was closing up its 25 year run of being the popular style, especially among the young.
Labrousse was young, studying art in London from a professor who taught that style. This was kind of her senior thesis. It's kind of a shame, because she was so good at it, but how could that style continue in a world gone mad with World War I? The party was over; there wasn't much room left for playfulness and curly cues. Art Deco, which replaced it, was the style of power, of force even.
I am happy to report that Jeanne went on to have a long career, painting many paintings, but not many more in Art Nouveau.
