This vintage holy card from 1867 addresses Mary as "St. Mary of the Sacred Heart," and the short prayer underneath can be translated as, "Through your hands, O, Holy Mother, we are flooded by Jesus' grace."

This lovely French card is not only beautiful but also instructive. It illustrates Mary receiving grace from Jesus and pouring it upon us. Some say that Mary as Mediatrix brings all grace to the world, and others say she only brings some. But either way, whatever she has, it all comes from her Son, our Lord Jesus.

Mary brings many blessings to us, as she first did by saying Yes at the Annunciation, and then by bringing a helpless baby into the world. The wedding at Cana, in Jone 2, lodges her first instance of being our advocate.

Some Catholics maintain that Mary is the Mediatrix of All Grace, and others say she is the Mediatrix of some of the graces, as Jesus can give them directly to people himself, or even send blessings down with the angels.

The card is from our favorite old days holy card company, Bouasse-Lebel, a Parisian publisher that lasted from around 1845 to about 1960. This one was from 1867, when the mother who had started the business had bowed out so her sons could run it. These mid-century colorized engravings are some of our favorite work; they were combining the old engraving technique with the new lithography.
