This ancient Roman mosaic shows a skeleton pointing to the Greek inscription, Know Thyself. He’s reminding us we are mortal. The Church has long taught memento mori, or "reminders of death," to encourage piety and focus believers on the eternal rather than the fleeting pleasures of earthly life.
That’s good for all of us, but we thought it especially good for teenage boys at Halloween. With the explanation on the back, with the Bible quotes, it could be the seeds of maturity and wisdom, if not faith. It’s good for all of us to recall that fact periodically, that this beautiful earthly life doesn’t last forever, so we can better gauge the direction of our lives.
The Roman mosaic is cool. It is from the 1st Century AD. It was unearthed on the Appian Way, the big ancient highway into Rome. We cleaned it up a little bit for this card. This is one of a series of Halloween cards we have made to help nudge the celebration of the holiday back towards God, where it came from. Planting seeds! You can find the whole collection in our store by searching for “Halloween”. We have some for little kids, and some, like this one, for older kids and adults.
