This lovely picture of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is from a church dedicated to her in Turin, Italy. Mount Carmel is in Israel, the site where God defeated the pagan priests through the prophet Elijah. During the Crusades of the 12th and 13th Centuries, some crusaders became hermits on Mt. Carmel.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel represents Mary giving the scapular to one of the monks, St. Simon Stock, and is traditionaly painted so she is giving it to you, the viewer. According to tradition, she gave it to St. Simon on July 16, 1251 and promised final perseverance in grace to those who remained faithful to Carmel until death. The scapular is a modified version of Mary’s own garment. It reminds wearers of the need for prayer and penance, and symbolizes Mary’s special protection for those who wear it. The Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is a major Marian Feast, happening July 16th each year. (sources: franciscanmedia.org and littleflowerbasilica.org)
