Elsewhere, this grubby, sloppy machine called the printing press is grinding out books. Fine. But you're the Queen of France, Anne of Brittany, and you want a Book of the Hours to help you in your prayers. You want it handmade, the way it has always been.

You summon the artist Jean Bourdichon to make one for you, and he does, and it's beautiful. Maybe you pause on the Pentecost image and ponder and pray for the Holy Spirit to come down within you, and maybe you remember St. Augustine's prayer to the Holy Spirit, and saying it, you open up and are infused with the joy and strength of the Lord. Circa 1508.
