St. Charles Borromeo (1538–1584) was a great friend of boys at the time of the Counter Reformation. Because of his inspiring leadership, many young me became seminarians and priests, and since they were filled with his zeal and conviction, they became a major force in the Counter Reformation. As Archbishop of Milan, he opened six seminaries, and he worked to admit holy young men who were poor into the priesthood, not just the rich and noble.
He was a Don Bosco-like figure of friendly fatherhood. He wrote the prayer on the back which conveys some of that spirit. It is a good prayer to say by any parish with a seminarian, and of course any family.
Our source for this information is the Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary (www.scs.edu). They also identify this painting as done by Pietro Araldi in 1809, and state its title as “Saint Charles Borromeo with Seminarians.” Elsewhere, someone else notes that the painting is held at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, Celana (Bergamo).
