This lovely French card shows the Madonna and Child in a formal composition, serene and dignified. We think the original engraving was in the early 1800s, and that this card was from around the 1840s. That was when they were adding block printed colors to engravings in holy cards.
Regina Coeli (Queen of Heaven) is an ancient prayer to Mary from at least the 1200s. It is used anytime but especially in Eastertide in place of the Angelus, among other things. It is one of the four Marian liturgical antiphons, of which the Savle Regina is the most famous. In the background of the prayer side of the card is the text of the prayer from a medieval document.
The first paper lace cards date back a few centuries earlier, but the Victorians really gained a mastery on the technique. The lace also helps us date the card to mid-19th Century. In French, lacey holy cards were called, "dévotes dentelles."
A note on Queenship: In the ancient world, queens were very often the mother of the king. That was the norm.
