This beautiful and classic holy card comes from the early 1800s, possibly 1820 or 1830, before lithograph printing, when they used block printing (or hand painting!) to colorize engravings. The publisher did not put their name on the card, which possibly suggests it was regional and the public would be able to guess who made it. It was however, French, or from French-speaking Belgium, based on the spelling "SAINTE MARIE."
The formal, regal style is a carryover from the previous two centuries, and while it makes Our Lady appear queenly, within the frame she is shown gentle and mild. Below her, it says “Aug 15” on the front, which is the Feast Day of the Assumption of Mary. It was not declared dogma until 1950, but it was celebrated on that date for many centuries prior.
We took a selection from the Litany to Our Mother of All Life and put them the back. We thought it was a beautiful prayer, and we felt it chimed with this wonderful blue and gold colored engraving.
