Bl Pier Frassati’s canonization is scheduled to occur during the Jubilee of Youth in Rome on Aug. 3, 2025. The miracle that let Pope Francis canonize him occurred a few years ago. A young seminarian in Los Angeles blew out his Achilles tendon while playing basketball with the other seminarians. His doctor told him he had to have surgery. The seminarian immediately started a novena to our friend Pier, and a week later he was crying in the chapel doing his novena while a tremendous warmth surrounded his ankle. A few days later, he went to be examined by the surgeon. The surgeon, looked at the MRI of his wrecked ankle, and seeing that it was now in perfect health, said, "You must have someone in Heaven who likes you."

Handsome and athletic, Pier Giorgio Frassati (1901–1925) liked a lot of peple. He loved God and was dedicated to God from his childhood. He was from a wealthy Italian family, he was a third order Dominican known for his work for the poor in his hometown of Turin, Italy. He was so devoted to the poor that at his funeral, thousands of poor people came to pay their respects. His family had no idea. He wasn't doing it to look good. He helped many people in his short life, gave a lot of love, and many loved him in return. Truly a great example of the love of Christ.

The people in Turin urged for his cause as a Saint. Rome took up the cause and investigated. When his remains were moved to the Turin Cathedral in 1981, they were found to be incorrupt. A miracle cure of someone who was praying to him helped St. Pope John Paul II declare him Blessed in 1990, calling Pier the "Man of the Eight Beatitudes." His Feast Day is July 4, an easy date for us to remember. Clearly on his way to Sainthood, he is a Patron of Students and Young Catholics, as well as mountaineers.
