Boumard-Fils was one of the great holy card makers in Paris towards the end of the last century, at a time when French artists were head and shoulders the best in the world. The culture of art and beauty that saturated Paris made French holy cards at the time some of the best that were ever done. That's why about 80% of our restored vintage cards are 19th Century French cards.
We've paired this gorgeous St. Patrick with a section of the famous Breastplate of St. Patrick. It is a unique and mystical morning offering, and I think any person you hand it to will find it at least somewhat intriguing. It invites them into God's world and gives them God's protection.
St. Patrick lived from around 386 to around 461 AD. He was born in Britain to a Roman family, and at age 16 he was grabbed by some Irish coastal raiders and sold into slavery in Ireland. He tended sheep there for about 6 years, and then escaped and got back to his home in Britain. He became a priest and returned to Ireland to do mission work to that pagan island. He established monasteries, churches, and schools.
He is famous for many things, some of them dipped in legend, including the long prayer, The Cry of the Deer. We have included an extract from that prayer for the back of this card. (We have the more famous excerpt on our other St. Patrick card, which features a lovely painting of Patrick by my wife Sue on the front.)
