This cool-looking 19th Century Teresa of Avila card has a really great prayer by her on the back.
Teresa of Ávila (1515-1582) is one of the greatest Saints of our Church. She was a mystic Carmelite and an important leader in the Counter-Reformation, which was the Catholic response to Protestantism. Early in her life, she struggled with poor health, even suffering two years of paralysis in her twenties. Spiritually, she would have periods of deep devotion followed by a lukewarm time.
The golden arrow in the picture was thrust by an angel into her heart and gave her an overwhelming love of God, a love which never again cooled. This was an actual mystical experience she had. In The Interior Castle, one of her several books, she talks about how to advance all the way in the spiritual life. It is still one of the most important books in Catholicism.
Along with St. John of the Cross, she founded the Discalced Carmelites, a renewal of that order through a return to simplicity and austerity. The word discalced means barefoot, from the Latin dis ("without") and calceus ("shoe").
St. Teresa was declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Paul VI in 1970, along with St. Catherine of Siena. Her Feast Day is October 15th. (source: catholicnewsagency.com)
