Thérèse was little when she made this card. I’m not scholar enough to dig deep through the archives to find an exact day, but it is noted on the back (by Celine?) that it was her first card she made at Les Buissonnets, where her family moved to in 1877. She was born 1873. She left that home for the convent in 1888, when she was 15. So maybe ten years old? Maybe 12? 14? How many children that old, now or then, are making holy cards?
Her calligraphy on the front says, “To suffer passes, but to suffer well lasts eternally.” How many ten-year-olds say thing like that? Therese got teased by the children when she went to school; all that talk about Jesus, Jesus, Jesus.
Our dear little friend Therese of Lisieux suffered greatly towards the end of her life, and we have put her thoughts on this suffering on the back, as well as an encouraging quote from First Peter. Peace be with you, friend.
