Forgive us, but there's a lot to like about this Thanksgiving card. It has a lovely picture by N.C. Wyeth, a good prayer, but our favorite part is the quote from George Washington on the back. The President declared, at the urging of Congress, the first national Thanksgiving Day, which he did. In his proclamation the said, “That we may then all unite in rendering unto him our sincere and humble thanks for his kind care.”
You could hand these out to everybody on Thanksgiving to say the grace together, and to get a bit of true American history.
N.C. Wyeth (1882 - 1945) was a famous American artist of the Golden Age of Illustration. This picture was originally used in a banking poster promoting American ideals of Thanksgiving as well as thrift and industry. It was done about 1921. We changed the "THREE HUNDRED" to "FOUR HUNDRED" and changed the rousing closing lines from the urging of work and savings to a short prayer of gratitude to Allmighty God. Wyeth had a painter son, Andrew, who was famous for his "Christina's World" painting of the woman laying down in a field looking at a farm house.
N.C. Wyeth. Thanksgiving Day. Alternate Title: Early New England
Oil on canvas. 33 1/2 × 30 in. (85.1 × 76.2 cm). In a private collection, Bernardsville, NJ.
If you want to use these cards year after year, be sure to get the plastic sleeves so people don't leave their fingerprints, etc., on the cards.
Thank you for your interest in our Christian art project.
