St. Francis loved nature because God created all the creatures, and so they were like brothers and sisters to him; they all had the same Father. What better way to infuse a nature painting than one with a Franciscan hermit and a friendly animal? This both honors nature and colors it with the spirit of Christ.

This idea has a lovely little tradition of Catholic devotional landscape paintings built around it. This is the third one we've found like this, not counting our pictures of Francis with the birds or Anthony with the fish, that we think is beautiful enough to put in our shop. For those people who are like-minded, like probably you since you're still reading, we hope it does your heart good. Peace be with you.

Leopold Rothaug (1868–1959) was an Austrian artist who came from an artistic family. He and his brother Alexander were taught art from their father, Theodor Rothaug, who was a painter. Both Leopold and Alexander went on to formal art training in Vienna and had long and distinguished art careers. Leopold also did set design, and in addition to working in Europe, also worked at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. (sources: austria-forum.org and beletage.com) Oil on canvas. 57 × 37 cm. (22 7⁄16 × 14 9⁄16 inches.) 1932. Private collection. (invaluable.com) The little tiny rectangles on the picture, if you look close, are cross hatches from the weave in the canvas, not pixels! Tis is a big, detailed file.

** IMPORTANT ** THE IMAGE IS SMALLER THAN THE PAPER! There is a blank border around the image. Approximately 0.5" wide for 5x7, 1.3" for 8.5x11, 1.6" for 11x14, and 1.75" for 13x17 and 16x20. For the two poster sizes, 18x24 and 24x36, we use 0.5" borders. We do this because the ratio of the rectangle of the art almost never matches the rectangle of the paper, and if it did happen to match one size, it would not match the others. Most fine art printers do this because otherwise they’d have to crop the art or warp it to make it fit the paper. The border looks good. It gives the picture a faux matted appearance. There is almost always a little more border either on the left-right sides, or the top-bottom, depending on whether the ratio of the art is wider or taller than the paper.

We make Archival Quality fine art prints:
– Acid-free paper
– Archival pigments
– Cardboard backer for sizes 11x14 and less.
– Above story of the art
– Enclosed in a tight-fitting, crystal-clear bag.
– Rated to last 200+ years without fading if kept dry and out of the direct sun.

Thanks for your interest!
