Venerable Fr. Emil Kapaun (1916-1951) was a Catholic priest and U.S. Army Chaplain whose cause is up for canonization. He was from Pilsen, Kansas, in the Wichita Diocese, and served in both World War II and the Korean War. He was known for his bravery and kindness and his devotion to the spiritual needs of the soldiers under his care.
In Korea, at the Battle of Unsan, as the Chinese communists, Allied forces retreated. Fr. Kapuan chose to stay with 800 wounded men rather than escape with the Allied forces. He managed to personally rescue 40 of them, for which he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, the United States Armed Forces' highest military decoration. In addition, he has recieved the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Legion of Merit, and many others awards and decorations.
He was taken prisoner and sent to the prison camps. According to the Knights of Columbus, in prison, "He was their hero... their admired and beloved "padre." He kept up the POWs' morale, and most of all, helped a lot of men to become good Catholics."
For seven months under grueling conditions, he spent himself in heroic service to his fellow prisoners without regard for race, color, or creed. He died in the camp May 23, 1951.
In 1993, Fr. Kapaun was named a Servant of God by Pope John Paul II, which is the first step towards canonization. In February of 2025, Pope Francis declared him Venerable. The next step towards Sainthood is Beatification, which seems very likely. Fr. Kapaun is still ministering on Earth, as there are numerous miracles attributed to him.
This is an exclusive photo restoration of Fr. Emil Kapaun, from our series of restored Saint photos. We hope these photos help you find yourself closer to the Saints, and thus closer to Jesus!
