The image of Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared miraculously on the cloak of Juan Diego, a simple indigenous peasant, on the hill of Tepeyac near Mexico City on December 12, 1531. Today it is displayed in the Basilica of Guadalupe nearby, the most visited Catholic shrine in the world. Pope John Paul II declared her patroness of the Americas.
Sue painted her version in acrylics and colored pencil on paper. The original was approximately 7 x 11 inches, and is owned by one of her best friends, who commissioned it.
The quote was spoken to Juan Diego at a time when he was distressed about his sick uncle. Our Lady had instructed him to come to Tepeyac that day, but, greatly worried, he decided to find a priest to care for his uncle instead. On the road, Our Lady appeared to Juan. She offered him these reassuring words:
"Am I not here, I, who am your Mother? Are you not under my shadow and protection? Am I not the source of your joy? Are you not in the hollow of my mantle, in the crossing of my arms? Do you need anything more? Let nothing else worry you, disturb you."
