This image was found in 1918 at the time of the Armistice ending World War I. It was in the basement of a Belgian Catholic boarding school run by Bernardine nuns. In style it is a blend of western Church figure painting and eastern Church icon writing. It is called Our Lady of Ollignies as that was the town in Belgium where it was found, and it is associated with the title Our Lady of Sorrows. It is said that prayers to Mary while meditating on this image have brought signal favors.
The boarding school had been attended some years earlier by Berthe Petit, a mystical third order Franciscan, and so this image is sometimes associated with her. She reported visions of Jesus, emphasizing the sorrowful quality to the sufferings of Mary. Her visions received a Nihil Obstat by Cardinal Mercier of Belgium, meaning Nothing Obstructs, i.e., they do not contradict the Catholic faith, but they have not yet been approved as valid by Rome. This image was the cover of a recent (well, recent to us) printing of a book we highly recommend, St. Louis De Monfort's The Secret of the Rosary.
** IMPORTANT ** THE IMAGE IS SMALLER THAN THE PAPER! There is a blank border all around the image of about .5" for 5x7, 1.3" for 8.5x11, 1.6" for 11x14, and 1.75" for 13x17" and 16x20". All Approx! The white space gives the framed picture a finished look without using a matt.

"In order to communicate the message entrusted to her by Christ, the Church needs art." ~ St. Pope John Paul II
I'm in love with this image of Mary from my St. Louis De Monfort book The Secret of the Rosary and I'm so happy to have been able to find this exact version on your website. You read my mind by sending the story of the picture along with the art. I taped it to the back as I was planning on printing it out myself for that purpose. Thank you for the prompt delivery and affordability. It makes a great addition to my home and I love meditating with this beautiful depiction of Mary while praying.
Excellent quality, exactly what I was looking for. I don't know if it is just me, but it looks 3 dimensional when I look at this image of Our Lady of Ollignies with a magnifying glass.
I am very happy to have this image of Our Lady of Ollignies. I am devoted to Our Lady of Sorrows, which led me to this image of Our Lady. I also recite the prayer written by Berthe Petit regarding Our Lady, which also ties in with this beautiful image. Thank you.
I fell in love with this mysteriously discovered picture of the Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary when I first encountered it on the cover of The Secret of the Rosary by St. Louis De Montfort (Martino Fine Books edition). Your print is exquisite -- perfect in every way. Thank you so much!
