Zelie and Louis Martin Print
"In the heart of the Church I will be love!" -St Therese of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face
This painting was done with reference to photos of two newly canonized saints, the parents of St. Therese of Lisieux, or "The Little Flower." She lived and died at the end of the nineteenth century in France. She was only 24 when she died in 1897, as a Carmelite nun. During her last illness she was ordered to write her story, which she called The Story of a Soul. It spells out her simple spirituality, the way of littleness, or spiritual childhood. That is why I like to portray her as a child.
Her parents Zelie and Louis Martin, had studied for the religious life previous to their marriage. They had a rather large family, with 5 daughters surviving to all enter the religious life. They are the first married couple in Church history to be canonized together.
