In this exclusively restored photograph, we can get a close glimpse into the character of St. Mary MacKillop, the first Saint from Australia. As it says at DiscerningHearts.com, she had a life "filled with adventure, struggle, suffering, persecution (she was even excommunicated at one point, but later completely exonerated), joy, triumph, and, to be sure, a great deal of faith, hope and love."

Born in 1842, she lived during the settlement of Australia, comparable to the Wild West of America. Because they didn't have schools yet, she founded an order of nuns, the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Sacred Heart, whose mission was to educate children of the poor, which was most everybody. She started many schools in Australia and New Zealand. She had a strong, loving personality as you can see in the photo. She died in 1909. Her Feast Day is August 8. She is the Patron Saint of Australia, and she is also informally seen as a patron saint of sexual abuse victims for her role in exposing a pedophile priest.
